Home Visits

Doctor's bag

Examination at the Surgery is the best option for most sick patients as conditions for examination at home are not always ideal. People are best seen and assessed in a well-equipped Surgery with good lighting, firm beds to help examination and access to their computer record, blood and urine tests, ECGs and others. Patients can be seen and treated much faster when they need medical attention urgently at the Surgery, rather than having to wait for a Home Visit later in the day. Home visits are also very time consuming as a Doctor can see 4 patients in the surgery in the time it takes to do 1 home visit.

Home visits are therefore only appropriate when the patients are:-

  1. At the end of life or have a terminal illness.
  2. Unable to leave their bed.
  3. Frail elderly patients or those with disabling conditions where they are unable to leave the house at all.

Sick children can almost always be brought to the Surgery. Bringing a child with a temperature out of the house is not dangerous and can actually help by lowering the temperature.

If you are unsure whether you need a home visit please ring the surgery and a Doctor will ring you back to assess your problem. If it is thought advisable for you or your child to come to Surgery to be examined and treated on that day, arrangements will be made for you to be seen as soon as possible.

Some patients who used to come to the surgery on City Road are now asking for home visits for their Chronic Disease checks. Unfortunately we are not able to offer home visits for routine checks unless patients are normally unable to leave the house. We are unable to visit mobile patients except for cases of acute illness and do expect them to come to the surgery.

Options available include:

  1. Arranging for a family member or taxi to bring you to the surgery.
  2. Arranging for Community Transport by ringing 265 4275

We only have limited resources and have to treat all patients fairly and hope that you will work with us and understand that we are doing our best to help all our patients.
